THE TRAGEDY OF KOSOVE AND CHECHNYA
Ironically, the world has awakened to the horror of events in
America at a time when it may be too late to offer any constructive advice or to exert
any political pressure in Kosovo and in Chechnya. A few years ago, the violence which
by now has killed many thousands of Muslims, could be seen as having clear religious
origins. There were still some possible courses of action outsiders could recommend
to these two poor areas and, at the time the world was so divided over what policy
to adopt toward the slaughtering of thousands of innocent Muslims, nothing was even
attempted. The carnage has become so widespread and its methods so vile and so incomprehensible
that it has forced itself on the world's attention. Again and again we heard of Serbian
attacks on peaceful villages of Muslims hacking people to death, cutting their throats,
raping the helpless women. A great many question demanded answers. Why hasn't anyone,
sometimes within earshot of the victims' screams, intervened to stop the slaughters?
However urgently answers are looked for, they cannot be expected but from ourselves.
In that regard, the Islamic Relief Association For The Orphans & Poor, being committed
to the active pursuit of this issue, had raised $ 400000 and delivered them to the
people of Kosovo. In addition and in order to focus public attention upon the human
suffering in these areas as they encounter them , and in order to make known the means
which such suffering may be remedied, a delegation headed by Mr. Na?f Athamna, vice
chairman went there for a seven-days visit. This was followed by a visit by Mr. Ebrahim
Al-Emor, head at the association, which lasted for six days. As for the tragedy of
Chechnya, we managed to raise more than $ 200000 and the campaign is still at "full
swing".
